"Do your best, be your best and keep going"
Karen and I have just returned from the IoD's Open House where Karren Brady delivered a keynote speech. The Baroness and "Business Woman of the Year" was incredibly inspirational to listen to, and we're here to pass some of that wisdom on to you.
If you're reading this, chances are you're an indie entrepreneur and you want to massively grow your business. This also means growing your team, and as you do this, follow Karren Brady's example. She knows you must create an entrepreneurial spirit within the organisation. Only by working together with your team can you achieve a winning strategy, and each member must be able to tap in to the entrepreneurial spirit that drives your business.
The role of the Board is to know what's wrong with the business before your competitors do.
Life is about taking risks, finding opportunities and pushing yourself. Obviously, sitting idly by accomplishes nothing, but you have to do each of the three things above to make the most of life. Find opportunities, take the risk on them, push yourself to accomplish them. Each step is essential to success.
On the Hardest Part of Business:
The hardest thing is trying to run a business and bring up a family. Often it can seem like there simply aren't enough hours in the day, like you don't know what to prioritise, or like one is suffering at the expense of the other. Though it's the hardest thing, it is possible to do both successfully!
Women in the UK earn 14% less than men and they reckon it will take 100 years for women to be paid the same level as men. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't have 100 years to wait. It's time to change now. As Brady says, "women have to demand their worth. We need to make a stand and ask" for what we want, not just hope for it.
Simply put, "feminism means wanting equality between women and men. I do not understand why everyone isn't a feminist."
On Dealing with Negativity:
When you're running your own business, you have to accept that not everyone believes in what you are doing. YOU have to believe, not rely on others to do it for you. We all know that it's difficult enough to find solutions to the problems faced every day, so Brady worries more about putting things right than she does about negativity. And rightly so!
It is so easy go give up. Not everything goes how you want. But in those moments is where persistence pays. Do not give up. Keep going.
"You never look down on people unless you're helping them up."
